A Condensed Buyers Guide
So, What Should I Buy?
So, you've had the crash course. You have learned that front-projection systems can greatly improve your ability to entertain yourself and others in your home. Front-projection systems also get you the biggest screens, the best video quality, and the coolest living room in town.
As for what type of projector you want, if you need it for watching standard NTSC TV, VHS, DVD and laserdisc, but have no plans to use it for HDTV, an inexpensive SVGA system may meet your immediate needs.
On the other hand, if you want to be able to some day enjoy HDTV to the fullest extent, you'll want to have at least an XGA or higher resolution projector.
Whichever way you go -- XGA, SVGA, LCD, DLP -- you'll reap the following rewards:
- Compact/portable (as light as 3 lbs.)
- Huge picture (up to 300-inch screen)
- Phenomenally bright image, even in lighted room (up to or over 5,000 lumens, vs. about 200-400 lumens for CRT)
- Like being in a movie theater
- Much less expensive than the older, clunkier technology (about $5,000 to $6,000 for a good XGA projector, vs. over $20,000 for a good CRT)
